WHMIS is consistent with the "workers’ right to know" according to which workers must know the nature of the hazards found in the workplace and the related control measures to be taken.In Canada, the current legislation in occupational health and safety requires that workers be informed of the risks they may encounter in the context of their employment. WHMIS therefore provides employers and workers with an additional tool to enable them to increase their knowledge of hazardous materials.
It is intended for any person exposed, directly or indirectly, to hazardous materials in his/her workplace.

To become familiar with labels, pictograms, classes and categories of hazards

Evolution of names
WHMIS 1988 / SIMDUT 1988 – Name used for the original system established in 1988.
WHMIS 2015 / SIMDUT 2015 – Commonly used name to refer to the updated version of the system incorporating the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), which came into force on February 11, 2015, and was fully implemented following the transition period that ended in late 2018.
WHMIS (or SIMDUT) without a year — Today, the system is simply referred to as WHMIS, although some resources still use WHMIS 2015 / SIMDUT 2015 to specify the regulatory version currently in force. This name applies to the system incorporating the GHS, based on regulations that have been amended since 2015. This is the most recent version currently available and the version distributed by OHStraining/SSTenligne.
